What Is Vegan?

Vegan is a word that was created by a British wood worker known as Donald Watson and his wife called Dot in the year 1944.

Watson became a vegan after he heard the death cry of a pig on his uncle’s farm. The experience was so shattering that he led and helped the growth of veganism in the world until he passed away at the age of 95 years of age.

Before explaining the word veganism let me define the meaning of vegetarianism and its different types because veganism is one of the different types of it.

Meaning of vegetarianism

Vegetarianism is the act of abstaining from the eating of meat, fish and animal related products.

There are different types of vegetarianism which I am going to broadly categorize into five groups.

Types of vegetarians:

1. Ovo vegetarians: the ovo vegetarians are one of the groups of vegetarians that do not eat meat, fish or animal related products except eggs. In the food they eat all about food concerning animal flesh is excluded but you’ll find egg in their meals.

2. Lacto vegetarians: lacto vegetarians are a group of vegetarians that do not eat meat, fish, eggs or any animal related product except dairy foods. Anything prepared from animal flesh including eggs they do not eat but they consume different dairy products like milk, butter, cheese and yogurt.

3. Ovo-Lacto Vegetarians: ovo-lacto vegetarians as you can visualize from the name is a combination of the ovo vegetarian mode of eating and the lacto vegetarian mode of eating hence the name ovo-lacto vegetarian. This group of people does not eat meat or fish but eat dairy products and eggs.

4. Fruitarians: do not eat meat, fish or any animal related product. They are mostly raw diet oriented people the eat it raw or half-cooked. They are highly spiritual these are strictly a set of people who too.

5. Vegans: this type of vegetarian group of people is the main purpose of this website I am writing today and I am going to define it this way;

Meaning of vegan

Vegan Meals

Vegan is the act or practice of not eating meat, fish or any animal related product. They are the strictest of the first three types of vegetarians. They do not wear or use clothes, belts, shoes, purses, suitcases and many other things manufactured using animal materials. Furs are produced from animal furs, belts, shoes, purses and other things are made from animal skin and this, the vegan does not use. So they take time to make the choice of what they eat, wear and use all the time.

Now you know the meaning of what is vegan so if you are a vegetarian and do not know the type of vegetarian you are before you can find out your type above.
